Diverse and Abundant
Discovery Center
Overview:
Students are presented with a container filled with diverse materials-they must make a determination of which set of objects contains the largest diversity of items and which items are the most abundant.

Time: 20 minutes

Location: Indoors

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Students will be able to be able to categorize objects with similar characteristics.
  2. Students will be able to differentiate between abundant and diverse.

Vocabulary:

Materials

  1. 20 small paper clips
  2. 10 large paper clips
  3. Various mini figurines of different animals.
  4. 5 red 1" squares of paper
  5. 5orange 1" squares of paper
  6. 5 yellow 1" squares of paper
  7. 5green 1" squares of paper
  8. 5 blue 1" squares of paper


Find. . .

  1. The box with multiple objects: colored paper, paper clips and plastic animals.

Do . . .

  1. Categorize all the objects in the box into groups that are similar.
  2. Count & record each object in each group. Count and record the different kinds of objects within each group. For example:
    • " 13 small paper clips
    • " 20 large paper clips

Read. . .

  1. Diversity- Within a group the number of DIFFERENT KINDS. In the paperclip example above there are two different kinds of paperclips so diversity would be two.
  2. Abundance- The group with the MOST objects.

Answer . .

  1. Which group of objects is the most ABUNDANT?
